October 16, 2019 - A pre-construction meeting was held last week in the Nacogdoches Area Office that signaled the beginning of a new construction project in Shelby County.
Work to reconstruct and widen the roadway will begin in coming days on FM 1645 from US 59 to SH 87. Motorists should remain alert to moving equipment and workers in and near the work zone. Traffic control will be in place during work hours.
Longview Bridge and Road, Longview, TX will serve as contractor for the $5.7 million project that is expected to be completed in December, 2021. Motorists are urged to obey all traffic control, prepare for delays and stay alert as they travel the area.

Update: The Texas Department of Public Safety has released the name of the driver of the van which perished in the fatal crash on Sunday to be Cedric Walker, 53 from Keithville, LA. No additional information is available at this time.
October 13, 2019 - State Highway 7 just west of Joaquin was the scene of a major crash which resulted in a fatality Sunday, October 13, 2019.
Joaquin Volunteer Fire Department (JVFD), ambulance personnel and a Shelby County Sheriff's Department Deputy all converged on the location to help those involved in the incident.
When the emergency personnel arrived, a white passenger van was in the middle of the roadway and a pickup truck with an RV trailer attached was on the eastbound side of the road.
JVFD firemen used Jaws of Life to extricate the driver of the van; however, he did not survive the crash.
Texas Department of Public Safety State Troopers began investigating the cause of the crash at that time.
According to information released from the Texas Department of Public Safety, preliminary crash investigation results indicate at approximately 11:30am, a white 2017 Chevrolet van was traveling west when for unknown reasons the van crossed over the center of the roadway and into the eastbound lane where it struck a grey 2010 GMC pickup that was towing a 2018 Heartland Bighorn 5th wheel travel trailer.
The driver of the Chevrolet van was pronounced deceased at the scene by Tracy Broadway, Shelby County Justice of the Peace Precinct 5. At this time, the identity of the driver is not available pending notification of next of kin.
Michael Webb, 69, from Etoile who was traveling with his wife, was the driver of the GMC and they were not injured during the crash.
This crash remains under investigation. No additional information is available at this time.
DPS Troopers investigating the crash incident were Daniel Dellenger, Brent Murray and Keith Jones.
October 15, 2019 - CR 3140 was the location of a single-vehicle major crash on October 13, 2019.
Joaquin Volunteer Fire Department (JVFD) firemen were just clearing the scene of a crash on State Highway 7 when they were alerted of the crash on CR 3140.
When emergency personnel arrived, two occupants remained in a pickup truck where the passenger was trapped. JVFD utilized Jaws of Life to help EMS personnel extricate him from the truck to an ambulance.
Once the driver was out of the truck it was determined he also needed an ambulance.
According to Texas Department of Public Safety State Trooper Keith Jones, at 1:44pm a blue 2000 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck driven by Jeremiah William Gregg, 17, of Center was eastbound on CR 3140 at an unsafe speed. Gregg stated he took evasive action and swerved to miss a dog in the roadway.
Gregg lost control of the truck and struck a tree head-on with the right front. The impact caused injuries to Gregg and a 16-year-old male passenger.
The passenger was transported by ambulance to Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital for treatment of his injuries, Gregg was transported by ambulance to Nacogdoches Medical Center - Shelby Emergency Department for treatment of his injuries.
Gregg was issued a citation for unsafe speed and violation of restriction B license front seat passenger 21 years or older. The 16-year-old passenger was also issued a citation for no seat belt.
October 14, 2019 - The City of Huxley is conducting a free chlorine burnout of its water distribution system. The burnout began on Monday, September 23rd, 2019. This event will last a maximum of 30 days.
Currently the City of Huxley uses chloramines for disinfection of the drinking water. Chloramines are created by combining chlorine and ammonia. During this free chlorine burn, the disinfection process will be changed from chloramines to free chlorine. Free chlorine is a stronger and faster-acting disinfectant. Customers may notice increased flushing throughout the water distribution system during this time period, and possibly the following free chlorine burnout.
This will allow flushing of the system to help remove sediment from the pipes and distribute the change in disinfectant.
It is important to understand that during this temporary change there may be some discoloration or cloudiness in the water and possibly a slight chlorine odor or taste. If this is experienced, customers may want to run the water through the tap until it clears. Minor pressure fluctuations and small air pockets may also occur. Flush valves should remove a majority of the color and odor, but some may reach customer lines during the process.
Is the Water Safe to Drink?
Yes, the water is safe to drink throughout this process.
Any odor and color issues will be nuisance only, which will subside as the flushing is completed. Discoloration in laundry is possible during this time. Cleaning additives are readily available at local stores to help prevent or remove any discoloration that may occur. Customers who use tap water for kidney dialysis at home should consult their doctor to advise them if any changes are necessary in their residual disinfectant neutralization procedures. Customers utilizing the water for aquariums should monitor both free and combined chlorine residuals.
During normal business hours residents may call 936-368-2633 or 936-368-2266 with any questions concerning the free chlorine burnout. The City of Huxley Water Utilities Department appreciates residents’ patience and understanding as it works to further improve the quality of the water for all customers.
October 8, 2019 - Due to construction starting on the Downtown Streetscape Project, parts of the Downtown Center Square will be blocked during Homecoming Weekend. The Homecoming Parade scheduled for Saturday, October 12th at 4pm will now move to the Center High School area.
Participants in the parade will line up and assemble at the New Center Elementary Parking Lot. The Parade will then move across the street and proceed past the Panola College Building and Tennis Courts, turning right at the Stadium and proceeding past the Agriculture Buildings, looping around the High School, and finishing at the New Elementary.
The public is asked to use existing parking areas at the Baseball Fields, Tennis Courts, and Cafeteria/Stadium areas. Please use caution when travelling in the school zones and enjoy the festivities!
The parade will return to the Downtown Square in 2020, thanks for your understanding and cooperation.

October 8, 2019 - The 2019 East Texas Poultry Festival Broiler Sale brought over $135,000 with the grand champion pen of broilers selling for $7,000.
Sixty-eight Shelby County 4-H and FFA youth exhibited at this year's show, with 40 pens of broilers making the sale. We would like to give special thanks to Judge Jacob Coppage for taking the time to come judge the show. Mr. Coppage spoke to several of the exhibitors and gave them several tips on how to grow an outstanding broiler.
The results of the show are as follows:
Kalei Larock of Center FFA sold her grand champion pen of broilers to Farmer’s State Bank for $7,000.
Lance Holloway of Center FFA won reserve champion honors with his pen of broilers, which sold to Borders Poultry Supply for $6,000.

October 9, 2019 - Drivers should now be aware, San Augustine Street on the Center Square is blocked to facilitate construction involved in the Downtown Streetscape Project. At this time a detour is sending vehicles approaching the square on the San Augustine Street side down Houston Street. At this time drivers are still able to turn on Austin Street driving away from the square.
October 8, 2019 - Preparation for the Downtown Stretscape Construction project in Center are currently underway, and travelers need to make plans to take alternate routes.
Austin Street is at this time blocked by chain link fence panels, and San Augustine Street has another section being assembled. Drivers are now not be able to make the turn off Nacogdoches Street onto Austin Street as the roadway is closed.
A detour is being established, and although the signs are not yet fully in place, it appears drivers will be redirected down Nacogdoches Street and turn on Houston Street to travel past the courthouse.
When the detour is more clear, we will add further information on Shelby County Today.

October 8, 2019 - On October 2, 2019, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality required the Paxton public water system, 2100031, to issue a Boil Water Notice to inform customers, individuals, or employees that due to conditions which occurred recently in the public water system, the water from this public water system was required to be boiled prior to use for drinking water or human consumption purposes.
The public water system has taken the necessary corrective actions to restore the quality of the water distributed by this public water system used for drinking water or human consumption purposes and has provided TCEQ with laboratory test results that indicate that the water no longer requires boiling prior to use as of October 8, 2019.

October 2, 2019 - Due to a broken water main the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality has required the Paxton water system ID# 2100031 to notify all Jackson customers 10/02/2019 to boil their water prior to consumption (e.g., washing hands/face, brushing teeth, drinking, etc). Children, seniors, and persons with weakened immune systems are particularly vulnerable to harmful bacteria, and all customers should follow these directions).
To ensure destruction of all harmful bacteria and other microbes, water for drinking, cooking, and ice making should be boiled and cooled prior to use for drinking water or human consumption purposes. The water should be brought to a vigorous rolling boil and then boiled for two minutes.
In lieu of boiling, individuals may purchase bottled water or obtain water from some other suitable source for drinking water or human consumption purposes.
When it is no longer necessary to boil the water, the public water system officials will notify customers that the water is safe for drinking water or human consumption purposes.
Once the boil water notice is no longer in effect, the public water system will issue a notice to customers that rescinds the boil water notice in a manner similar to this notice.
Please share this information with all the other people who drink this water, especially those who may not have received this notice directly (for example, people in apartments, nursing homes, schools, and businesses). You can do this by posting this notice in a public place or distributing copies by hand or mail.

October 5, 2019 - Kalei LaRock, a senior at Center ISD, showed the Grand Champion chicken at the 2019 East Texas Poultry Festival Broiler show. Reserve Grand Champion broiler was shown by Lance Holloway. The auction will be held tonight at 7pm under the big tent.
