The Shelbyville Lady Dragons varsity softball team was eliminated on Thursday after a 4-0 run loss during Game 2 of a best-of-three game elimination series with the Como-Pickton Lady Eagles. The series was the Texas UIL Region III Final round of the state tournament which saw Class 2A schools pairing down from eight remaining teams to just four this week.

Game 2 was a defensive battle which saw only four total hits by both teams combined. Como-Pickton’s Mattison Buster gave up a single, walked only one batter, and struck out sixth during the win. For Shelbyville Lanie Bass gave up only three hits, struck out six, and walked three. The Lady Dragons uncharacteristically committed four defensive errors during the contest.

The Lady Eagles gained a 2-0 run lead in the bottom half of the third inning when Maggie Brown led off with an infield hit and later scored on a Lady Dragon’s throwing error. Gracie Thompson reached on an error and later scored to put the Eagles up 2-0 when Addi Monk singled to leftfield.

The Lady Dragons was able to get two runners on the basepaths during the top of the fourth inning when Nicole Harvey patiently drew a walk and then, three batters later, Taylor Jones was able to reach base on an infield hit with two outs. The Eagle defense was able to end the inning before either scored. They were able to set the Lady Dragons down this game in 1-2-3 fashion six of the seven innings they faced them this game.

The final two runs of the contest came during the bottom of the sixth when Mattison Buster reached on a walk to start the frame and Addi Monk drove her in with an RBI double. Monk later scored the game’s final run by racing home on a fielder’s error.

The loss finishes an impressive season for the Lady Dragons with a 25-16-1 overall record. Despite entering the State Playoffs as District 22 2A’s third seed, with a 8-4 record, they have shown vast improvement and battled it out to win four best-of-three game series over Lovelady, Evadale, Joaquin, and Hawkins before falling to Como-Pickton. The team is young, graduating two seniors, and is showing steady improvement for next season. The Lady Dragons, Shelbyville High School, Coaches Ryan Mason, Christian Clark, and Kerry Stone can be very proud of this year’s impressive playoff run.

The Lady Eagles are 37-2 this season. They are currently on a 26-game winstreak and have not lost since March 4. Their only two losses are to 3A schools Winsboro and Franklin prior to district play. They will next face the winner of the Region 1 final between Stamford and Forsan high schools.

May 22, 2023 - Lady Dragon Softball will play in the Regional Finals on May 24-25 at Marshall High School versus Como-Pickton.

Game 1: Wednesday, May 24 at 6pm (Home, 1st game, 3rd base side)
Game 2: Thursday, May 25 at 6pm (Visitor, 2nd game, 1st base side)
Game 3: Saturday, May 27 at 4pm (if game)

Game 2 was close with Douglass gaining a 2-0 run lead in the bottom of the first inning. This cut the DHS lead to 2-1.

The Shelbyville Lady Dragons varsity softball team ended a 21-game run for the Hudson Lady Hawks with a 5-3 run Game 1 win on Thursday. Shelbyville then eliminated Hawkins by defeating them by a 9-1 run score in Game 2 on Friday. The Lady Hawks came into the series ranked number 7 in the state by the Texas Girls Coaches Association poll. Their season ends with a 23-4 overall record. Shelbyville is now 25-14-1 for the season.

Shelbyville jumped out to a 1-0 run lead when sophomore Kylie Snell tripled off the leftfield wall to lead off the top of the first inning. Soon after she scored on a ball which passed behind the Lady Hawks catcher. Snell, Carsey Lovell, Taylor Jones, and pinch runner Bre Chambers each scored during a rally in the third inning and gave Shelbyville a 5-0 run lead. The fifth inning saw Gracie Leach reach base on an infield hit and score when Jayleigh Jones singled to rightfield. This gave SHS a 6-0 advantage.

Hawkins scored their only run of the contest when Londyn Wilson doubled to leftfield and drove in Jordyn Warren to put the game’s score at 6-1 in the sixth inning. A Lady Dragons rally in the top of the seventh inning saw Emily Pharris, Gracie Leach, and Jayleigh Jones each score to give Shelbyville a 9-1 lead going into the final at bat for Hawkins. Shelbyville pitcher sophomore Lanie Bass struck out the first two batters she faced in the final inning and freshman teammate Kenadee Lathan recorded the final out on a groundout to help end the game. Bass struck out 10 batters in Game 2 and allowed only 2 walks for the day. She pitched the entire game. Hawkins pitchers Trinity Hawkins and Kalyn Ellison teamed up to strike out 5 and walked 3. Shelbyville hit safely 12 time and Hawkins earned 4 hits for the day.

Shelbyville Head Coach Ryan Mason’s staff and team have moved into new territory as the team will head to the Texas UIL Region III Softball Finals next week to face the number 2 ranked (35-2) Como-Pickton Lady Eagles. Mason moved up to take the helm in 2021 after a stint as an assistant at Joaquin. Assisting Mason are coaches Kerry Stone and Christian Clark.

Mission Statement

The purpose of The Friends of Center Roughrider Athletics perpetual fund is to raise money that can be distributed to all female and male sports within the Center Athletic Program. These sports currently include Basketball, Football, Baseball, Softball, Track, Tennis, Powerlifting, Volleyball, Soccer, Golf, Cross Country Running, and Soccer. The goal is to raise $500,000 over the course of five years through donations and various community events. Once the financial threshold has been reached the annual earned proceeds would be distributed to the Center Athletic Department. A secondary goal would be to use the annual earned proceeds to provide scholarships to student athletes graduating high school and looking to continue their education or vocational schooling.

Currently there are 340 student athletes in the program spanning a total of twelve sports. The current demographic makeup of the athletic program is 43% Hispanic, 35% African American, and 22% Caucasian. The need for supplemental funding arises from the fact that current budgets are relatively small to the number of participants and leaves many of our sports inadequately funded. Our goal is to ensure that all sports are adequately funded so they have the proper equipment and safety protocols.

We know that in many cases the singular motivation for our student athletes to attend school is athletics. We believe that a strong and properly equipped athletic program will provide the added incentive for our student athletes to attend school and ultimately graduate. While our goal is to be competitive on the field, we place a much higher value on providing a platform that will allow our student athletes to be competitive in the classroom, in the workforce, and in everyday life.
