January 19, 2024 - Good Morning! It's Friday, January 19.

It's amazing how quickly our priorities can change.

26 days ago, on Christmas Eve, my family was eyeing all those presents under the Christmas tree, counting down the hours until the great unwrapping ceremony. And then everything changed. My wife suffered a stroke and was taken by ambulance to a hospital, where she stayed for five days. Then, for three weeks, she was in a rehab facility. Yesterday, finally, she came home.

January 17, 2024 - Good Morning! It's Wednesday, January 17.

One of my favorite Pop songs is also one of my favorite Bible passages - imagine that! In 1965 the #1 song in America was "Turn, Turn, Turn". Those 3 words were just about the only lyrics that the "songwriter" added from Ecclesiastes 3:1-8.  We often refer to it as "To Everything There is a Season". It is certainly the #1 hit with the oldest lyrics!

As the story goes, the writer Ernest Hemingway was having dinner with some friends, when he offered a challenge. Who could write the best story - using only six words?

Everyone put in $10 and the winner would get the pot. Hemingway won his own contest when he wrote... For sale: baby shoes, never worn.

You could think about that story for a long time.

January 15, 2024 - Good Morning!  It's Monday, January 15.

Did you know that there are two national "service" days each year?  One is September 11 and the other . . . is today.  In 1994 a bill was sponsored by Congressman John Lewis to encourage Americans to serve their communities, to encourage Americans to make a difference, to encourage Americans to help those less fortunate than themselves.  What better person to suggest a day of service than a man who devoted his life to service.

On this date in 1969, the singer B.J. Thomas released the song "Hooked on a Feeling". It became a million seller and was the first big hit for Thomas, who would go on to have a successful career that spanned seven decades until his death in 2021. But today's devotion isn't about B.J. Thomas. It's centered on this thought - you never know what you'll find when you go to church!

First Baptist Church of Center, Texas has just such a moment coming this Sunday. After 15 months without a senior pastor, we will vote on prospective candidate Porter Brewer.

January 10, 2024 - Good Morning! It's Wednesday, January 10.

Willie Amos Criswell went home to glory on this day in 2002 at the age of 92. W A (as he was known) was the pastor of First Baptist Church of Dallas for five decades. He came to lead that congregation in 1944, replacing George Washington Truett, who had been pastor for almost a half century. So, in the span of 100 years, First Baptist Dallas had just two pastors. In the last 30 years, they've had four!

Today's devotion is all about 3:16. There are 49 "3:16" verses in the Bible. Why not 66? Well, some books, like Psalms, have a 3rd chapter with less than 16 verses, and other books, like Jude, don't have a 3rd chapter at all.

David’s Daily Devotion for Jan. 8

January 8, 2024 - Good Morning! It's Monday, January 8.  

There's a particular part of our worship service at First Baptist Center that we try to keep simple - our invitation. We use just a few songs that are frequently repeated. I want our congregation to be listening to the moving of the Spirit in that moment, not worrying about the lyrics and melody of some new song. Our focus this morning is on the hymn we sang at our altar call yesterday.
